The Munda of the Sundarbans: People, Forest, and Living Heritage
Understanding the history, culture, and human–mangrove relationship of an Indigenous community in southwestern Bangladesh.

1. Who Are the Munda?

The Munda are an Indigenous community whose historical roots are associated with the Chotanagpur Plateau and adjoining regions of eastern and central India. They belong to the broader Austroasiatic linguistic and cultural world, and the Mundari language is part of the Munda branch of the Austroasiatic language family.

In Bangladesh, Munda communities live in several villages along the southwestern coast, particularly in Satkhira District, near the Sundarbans. Their presence in this tidal landscape reflects a history of migration, settlement, labour, adaptation, and cultural continuity.

For a traveler visiting the Sundarbans, meeting the Munda offers a perspective that extends beyond the forest's wildlife. It introduces a human landscape shaped by generations of interaction with rivers, mangroves, agricultural land, cyclones, and the challenges of living beside a protected forest.

The Munda are not simply a community living near the Sundarbans. Their history, livelihood, identity, and cultural practices form part of the wider story of human life in the delta.

2. The Munda and the Making of the Sundarbans Settlement Landscape

The history of human settlement in the Sundarbans is complex. Over generations, different communities have occupied, cultivated, and adapted to its changing landscape. Forest clearing, embankment construction, agriculture, fishing, and other forms of resource use have transformed parts of the delta, often at considerable human and environmental cost.

Historical accounts of Munda communities in southwestern Bangladesh describe their involvement in clearing forested land, constructing embankments, and preparing land for cultivation and settlement. These accounts are important for understanding how Indigenous labour contributed to the development of inhabited areas along the forest frontier.

However, the broader history of settlement cannot be attributed to one community alone. The Munda experience should instead be understood as part of a wider history involving migration, colonial-era land development, labour relations, and the expansion of agriculture into forested areas.

For visitors, this raises an important question:

Who helped shape the landscape we see today, and whose contributions remain overlooked in the history of the delta?

A visit to a Munda village provides an opportunity to explore this question through historical research, local oral histories, and conversations with community members.

3. Language, Oral History, and Cultural Identity

Language is one of the most important ways communities preserve their identity across generations. Mundari, the language associated with the Munda people, belongs to the Austroasiatic language family. Language use varies across communities, however, and Munda families in Bangladesh may also speak Sadri, Bengali, or other languages depending on their migration history and social environment.

The relationship between language and identity is especially important when studying communities whose histories have often been recorded by outsiders.

Songs, stories, family histories, rituals, and personal memories can preserve knowledge that may not appear in official documents. Listening to these accounts can help travelers understand how community members remember their ancestors, interpret their surroundings, and pass cultural knowledge to younger generations.

Rather than describing an Indigenous language as simply an unwritten or vanishing language, a responsible guide should investigate which languages are spoken locally, how they are transmitted, and what community members themselves say about their future.

A question for the traveler: What can oral history teach us about a place that written records alone cannot explain?

4. Spirituality, Nature, and Banbibi

For communities living beside the Sundarbans, the forest is not merely a landscape of trees and wildlife. It is also a place associated with livelihoods, uncertainty, spiritual beliefs, and the risks of entering a powerful natural environment.

Traditional Munda religious practices include reverence for Singbonga and various spirits, commonly referred to as Bongas. These beliefs are associated with the natural world, community life, and relationships between people and their surroundings. Practices vary among Munda communities and have evolved through historical and cultural contact.

In the Sundarbans, Banbibi holds particular significance as a guardian figure associated with the forest and protection from its dangers. Her worship is shared across religious and social boundaries in the region. Forest-dependent people may seek her protection before entering the mangroves for fishing, crab collection, honey gathering, or other activities.

For Munda communities in the Sundarbans, exploring Banbibi traditions can help visitors understand how spiritual practices intersect with local identity and the realities of forest-dependent livelihoods.

It is important, however, not to assume that every Munda family follows the same religious practices or interprets Banbibi in the same way. A guide should invite community members to explain their own beliefs and experiences.

5. Living Beside the Royal Bengal Tiger

The Sundarbans is internationally known for its Royal Bengal tiger, but for people living along its boundaries, the forest represents more than a wildlife destination.

Some households depend on fishing, crab collection, honey gathering, and other forest-related activities. These livelihoods can expose workers to dangerous conditions, including encounters with tigers and crocodiles. Cyclones, flooding, embankment failures, and increasing soil and water salinity add further pressures to life in the coastal delta.

The consequences of a tiger attack may extend far beyond the individual incident, affecting household income, family responsibilities, and children's opportunities. Women who lose their husbands in forest-related incidents may face particularly difficult economic and social circumstances.

Understanding these realities helps travelers see the Sundarbans through a broader lens. Conservation is not only about protecting wildlife; it also involves understanding the lives, vulnerabilities, knowledge, and aspirations of the people who live beside the forest.

A respectful guide should avoid turning personal tragedy into a spectacle. Stories of loss should be shared only with appropriate consent and sensitivity, while recognizing that local residents have their own perspectives on safety, conservation, and coexistence.

6. Social Customs, Community Leadership, and Celebration

Munda cultural identity is expressed through family relationships, community leadership, customary practices, music, dance, and seasonal celebrations.

Traditional Munda communities have various forms of customary leadership and religious authority. The term *Pahan* is associated with a ritual or religious role in some Munda communities, although the position and responsibilities may differ between regions.

Marriage customs, kinship systems, and clan relationships also form important parts of Munda social life. Some accounts describe clan exogamy, meaning that marriage within the same clan is prohibited, as well as particular symbolic marriage rituals. These practices should be investigated locally rather than assumed to be universal among Munda people.

Festivals such as Sarhul, Karam, and Tusu are associated with different Indigenous communities and regional traditions. Their significance, form, and observance vary. Similarly, Haria, a traditional fermented rice-based drink in some communities, may feature in social or ceremonial contexts.

For travelers, the most meaningful approach is not to collect cultural customs as curiosities, but to understand what these practices mean to the people who maintain them today.

7. The Munda Today: Heritage, Livelihood, and Change

The Munda community's story is not confined to the past. It continues through education, employment, family life, cultural expression, and changing relationships with the wider society.

Some Munda households in southwestern Bangladesh face challenges involving land access, economic security, educational opportunities, social recognition, and environmental vulnerability. The extent and nature of these challenges differ between households and villages and should be established through current local research.

At the same time, community members are active participants in shaping their own futures. Their knowledge, skills, language, and cultural traditions are living resources rather than remnants of a disappearing past.

A responsible cultural expedition should therefore explore both continuity and change: what community members want to preserve, what they want to develop, and how they wish outsiders to understand their identity.

8. Why the Munda Matter to a Sundarbans Expedition

A conventional wildlife safari introduces travelers to the Sundarbans through its waterways, mangrove vegetation, birds, deer, crocodiles, and the possibility of observing a tiger. A Munda cultural expedition adds another dimension by examining the human history of the forest frontier.

It connects three themes:

The ecological landscape: How tidal rivers, mangrove vegetation, wildlife, and environmental change shape life in the delta.

The historical landscape:How migration, forest clearing, embankments, agriculture, and settlement have influenced the region over time.

The living cultural landscape: How Indigenous identity, oral history, spirituality, livelihoods, and community aspirations continue to shape life beside the forest.

Together, these themes help travelers understand that the Sundarbans is both a globally significant ecosystem and a lived landscape with complex human histories.

9. A Guide's Approach to Meeting the Munda Community

When introducing travelers to a Munda village, the objective should be mutual understanding rather than simply observing an Indigenous community.

A meaningful visit may include:

Listening to community members describe their family histories and migration stories.
Learning about local languages, songs, storytelling, and cultural transmission.
Discussing how fishing, agriculture, forest access, and environmental change influence livelihoods.
Understanding how spiritual beliefs and Banbibi traditions relate to life beside the Sundarbans.
Exploring community perspectives on education, cultural preservation, and future opportunities.
Supporting locally led guiding, food, accommodation, performances, and craft activities where these are voluntarily offered.

Photographs, interviews, performances, and visits to private homes should always respect consent, privacy, and community preferences. Travelers should understand that no individual is expected to represent the entire Munda community.

Closing Reflection: A Forest Has More Than One Story
The Sundarbans is often described through its biodiversity, its rivers, and the mystery of its mangrove forest. Yet its history also belongs to the people who have migrated through it, worked its land, navigated its waterways, and built their lives along its changing boundaries.

The Munda offer an important perspective on this relationship between people and place. Their history invites us to ask how Indigenous communities have contributed to the making of the delta, how cultural knowledge survives through generations, and how conservation can recognize the dignity and aspirations of the people living beside the forest.

To understand the Sundarbans, we must learn to read both the mangrove and the human stories rooted within it.
